Takahashi leads Abbott after "perfect" short
Rippon and Mahbanoozadeh sit fourth, fifth going in to free

(02/18/2011) - Daisuke Takahashi and Jeremy Abbott lost their national titles, but if Friday's short program event in Taipei is any guide, they are back on track.

Takahashi eclipsed the field with a scintillating short program to Rumba and pulsating Mambo rhythms. His 83.49 points puts him 6.76 ahead of Abbott, who had a solid outing of his Tango program.

Abbott's U.S. teammate Adam Rippon is fourth despite a fall on his triple Axel. Armin Mahbanoozadeh is fifth after his triple Axel was judged under rotated by the technical panel.

Through an interpreter, Takahashi, 24, who last March became the first Japanese man to earn the world title, said, "This was my season's best score for this routine. It is the first time I've been able to present it perfectly. It gives me confidence that I can live up to my responsibilities and retain the title [in Tokyo next month]."

Takahashi opened his routine with a sultry rumba to "Historia de un Amor" and progressed with increasing tempo to very entertaining mambos. He hit all of his elements, including a triple flip-triple toe combination and triple Axel, with ease.

"I felt comfortable and confident throughout the performance . . . at Japanese nationals I didn't feel so confident for the short program. I wasn't 100% into it and I was only fourth," he said.

In that competition, he was only third overall, losing his national title to Takahiko Kozuka, 21, who lies sixth here after faulting two of his jump elements.

Like Takahashi, Abbott had a disappointing national championship, but rebounded here with a strong performance.

Dressed in a sophisticated, schizophrenic outfit with one half of a black jacket and the other side a white shirt and silver waistcoat, he executed all seven elements in his Tango routine without a major flaw.

Still, he was surprisingly negative about his performance.

"Today was very shaky," he said. "Usually in this program, I have a lot of fire and it's explosive. Today, from the get-go, I had no feet on the ice. I landed my jumps but sometimes it's about more than that. It was just shaky. Not my best, not my worst, it just was! I'm relieved I stayed vertical."

He was, perhaps, a little hard on himself.

In the two most important moves, the combination of jumps and the triple Axel, Abbott was only marginally behind Takahashi. Takahashi received 0.20 more for his combination and 0.28 more on the Axel.

However, the 2009 and 2010 U.S. champion, who placed a disappointing fourth at the 2011 U.S. Figure Skating Championships last month, could have gained more points on the three spins, and the landing on his triple Lutz was a little shaky.

"It was very disappointing for me not to be on the U.S. world team," Abbott said. "When I got back home, I was very upset and I didn't have the motivation to come here. [oh Jeremy...]

"But after a couple of days I stopped feeling sorry for myself. I kind of looked at it as a start to next season. Although I won't be going to the world championships, I think this is kind of a new step toward next year. I just want to skate well here and move on to next season and have a good start."

Yuzuru Hanyu, Japan's 16-year-old world junior champion, who was fourth in the Japanese championship, gained the second highest technical score and lies only a fraction (0.30) behind Abbott with 76.43 points.

"I'm very surprised to be in third place," he said. "I was just trying to do my best and I was happy to achieve that today."

Rippon, fifth at the U.S. Championships, fell on his triple Axel in his flowing program to Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet overture but still gained 72.71 points and is well placed going in to the free skate.

About his fall on the first element, the 21-year-old said, "I had a little trouble on the triple Axel. I stepped out and then just fell after the step out. It was kind of a spooky fall, but I put it behind me.

"After the triple Axel, I felt I skated really strong and I was really happy with the rest of the program. The triple Axel, obviously, is a big mistake but my score isn't terrible and I know I can pull up for the free skate."

The 19-year-old Mahbanoozadeh -- whose long last name means "born of a woman as beautiful as the moon" -- was a little upset with being given a slight under-rotation call for his triple Axel. He earned 66.40 points for fifth place.

"I'm surprised on the triple Axel, I've never gotten it under-rotated before so I'll have to go back and look," he said. "I skated well and sometimes you get the marks, sometimes you don't.

"I felt excited. I was comfortable on the ice today. I've had ups and downs this week in practice but I was glad I could pull out a vertical program without any major mistakes. Maybe I'm a little too into the music (which he mixes himself); I had a little stumble on the footwork. But I enjoy what I do and try to project that out to the audience."

Daisuke Takahashi (JPN) strikes gold in the Men's event

Daiskuke Takahashi of Japan struck gold in the Men's event. Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan claimed the silver medal and Jeremy Abbott (USA) took the bronze.

Performing to “Invierno Porteno” by Astor Piazzolla, Takahashi missed his opening attempted quadruple toeloop, but bounced right back to nail a triple Axel-double toe and five more clean triple jumps. The World Champion got a level four for one spin, but the other two were a level two. Takahashi posted a new seasons best with 160.51 points and racked up a total of 244.00 points to claim his second Four Continents title.

“I made several small mistakes including the mistake on the quad”, Takahashi said. “I'm not satisfied with today's performance. Also, I felt tired at the end of the program so it's not a perfect performance. But I'm pretty happy about the score and the placement.”

Hanyu nailed a quadruple toeloop right out of the gate in his routine to “Zigeunerweisen” by Pablo de Sarasate and then reeled off six other triples including two Axels. However, he struggled with the triple Lutz. The current World Junior Champion scored 151.58 points, a seasons best, and moved up to second place at 228.01 points. “It seems like I'm in a dream. I can't believe this happened and that I'm on the podium at the Four Continents Championships. I don't have yet any emotions about it, because I haven't realized it yet. The quad was better than I ever expected, I'd give myself a 120 points out of 100 for it”, the 16-year-old commented.

Abbott's program to “La Vita E Bella” featured six triples, but he went down on an underrotated quad toe. The two-time U.S. Champion got a seasons best with 148.98 points and slipped from second to third at 225.71 points. “Best of the season. That’s all I could ask for to come here and do the best program that I’ve done this season. The goal all season was to progress in each competition and to put my best out at Four Continents and Worlds, I’m doing that but unfortunately there’s not that step to Worlds. There is next year. I’m done with this season, I can leave here with my head held high”, the 25-year-old said.

Takahiko Kozuka (JPN) moved up from sixth to fourth at 223.52 points. He landed five good triple jumps and only fell on the quad toeloop and was ranked second in the Free Skating. Defending Champion Adam Rippon (USA) finished fifth. He had problems with his triple Axel (210.01 points).

Miki Ando (JPN) crowned Ladies Champion

Japan's Miki Ando skated off with the gold medal and her first Four Continents title Sunday. Mao Asada of Japan claimed the silver medal and Mirai Nagasu earned the bronze, her first medal at an ISU senior level Championship.
Ando turned in a flawless performance of her program to Edvard Grieg's Piano Concerto in A Minor, reeling off a six triples including a double Axel-triple toeloop combination and two triple Lutzes and three level-four spins. The 2007 World Champion picked up a season best of 134.76 points, which added up to 201.34 points overall. “I was a little tired, so it was not perfect, but I think I did a good job. This is good for Worlds and gives me confidence. Actually, I've done only clean free programs this season. The short program was more of a problem”, Ando said.

Asada opened her program to “Liebestraum” by Franz Liszt with a triple Axel followed by five triples, only the triple toe in combination with a double Axel was underrotated. With 132.89 points, the reigning World Champion improved her seasons best by more than 30 points. She remained in second place at 196.30 points. “I was disappointed with the short program yesterday, but today I think I've done everything I could do for now. I'm pretty happy. It (the triple Axel) felt so good. This was one of the best triple Axels for this season. I think I got the momentum for Worlds and I have a good feeling for Worlds”, Asada told the press.

Skating to the “Memoirs of a Geisha” soundtrack, Nagasu delivered a strong performance that featured six triples. She also produced difficult spins that were graded a level four. The 17-year-old surpassed her previous seasons best by 20 points with 129.68 points and moved up from fourth to third at 189.46 points overall. “I’m really happy I went out there and gave the best performance I could have. Even in practice, I haven’t been skating that well because I keep missing the double Axel-triple toe or my triple Lutz. But here I was able to do everything I wanted to. I’m glad I was able to pull out a good performance for my last competition (of the season)”, Nagasu commented.

Rachael Flatt (USA) also skated very well but still dropped to fourth with 180.31 points. Alissa Czisny (USA) missed two jumps and remained in fifth place (168.81 points). http://www.isu.org/vsite/vcontent/content/transnews/0,10869,4844-128590-19728-18885-312555-3787-4771-layout160-129898-news-item,00.html

The article from WORDS TO BUMBLE source http://wordstobumble.wordpress.com/2011/02/22/four-continents-mirai-nagasu-amp-jeremy-abbot-strike-back/

Four Continents: Mirai Nagasu & Jeremy Abbott Strike Back

The Four Continents figure skating competition serves as a counterpart to the European Championships, bringing together athletes from the Americas, Asia, Africa and Oceania in a warm-up for the upcoming World Championships in March.
Mirai Nagasu and Jeremy Abbott of the U.S. both suffered disappointment at Nationals this past January, where neither delivered a strong enough free skate (after Nagasu led and Abbott stood in second coming out of the short program competitions) to represent the U.S. at Worlds in Tokyo next month.

Nagasu was swept back by Alissa Czisny, despite a solid long program that still garnered her a bronze finish; Abbott suffered a couple falls and could not stand up to the positive energy behind Ryan Bradley, coming in just off the podium in 4th place.

Of course, bronze and one step off the podium—in the great scheme of things—are not to be sneezed at, but Abbott was the defending champion (and fourth place is always rough city in medal sports) and Nagasu has serious demons to battle whenever she leads in the short.

So basically, this Four Continents competition took the place of Worlds for Nagasu and Abbott this season.

They made the most of it.

After a strong short program that landed her in fourth position, Nagasu finally hit the perfect Memoirs of a Geisha free skate that has eluded her all season, winning her the bronze behind Miki Ando and Mao Asada (World Champion) of Japan, leading the American women at Four Continents.
The aerial view of a spin element around 1:45 is a neat vantage point not generally shown. The whole program was delightful and the expression on Nagasu’s face at the end because she knows it, is priceless.

Yay, podium!

Also the announcer accidentally proclaimed that she was representing Japan during her bows before a hasty correction was made. Hello awkward.

Abbott came out of the men’s short program in second position and delivered his season’s best in the free skate (148.98, 225.71 total), likewise landing himself on the podium with a bronze medal, the leading American man.

I love that Life is Beautiful free skate. Love it.
Sandra Bezic agrees, calling it “one of the most beautiful programs I’ve ever seen.”

Like Nagasu, Abbott prevented a Japanese podium sweep, standing behind Daisuke Takahashi and newcomer Yuzuru Hanyu.
