Yoyogi National Stadium

Yoyogi National Stadium is a central stadium built in Tokyo, Japan’s Yoyogi Park. The stadium, also often known as Yoyogi National Gymnasium, or Yoyogi Stadium was built between 1961 and 1964 in preparation for hosting the 1964 Tokyo Summer Olympic Games. Designed by Kenzo Tange, the Stadium has become world famous for its suspension roof design and was the inspiration for the building of Frei Otto’s arenas for the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics.

The stadium holds 10,500 people at full capacity and was originally used for both swimming and diving events when it was first opened. Since then, the arena has been used for everything from diving to ice hockey and basketball. Most recently, the stadium was used in 1997 and 1998 to open the NHL hockey season with matches between the Vancouver Canucks and Anaheim Ducks, as well as the San Jose Sharks and Calgary Flames. Other recent uses of the arena include a number of concerts, mostly rock concerts with a number of overseas artists and domestic arena shows taking place here.

well it was such a long time ago I only have a vague memory, but that's where I learned to skate for the first time. It was the only Olympic size rink I have ever been on, I remember it was enormous compared to other rinks I used afterwards!!! It was very well equipped and a nice arena, and I imagine since then (more than 20 years ago!) they have done loads of updating to the venue too. It would be cool to see the place again!

Earthquake, Tsunami in Japan
11 Mar 2011 10:32

As you probably are aware an earthquake and a so defined Tsunami hit the territory of Japan today March 11, 2011.
The ISU received an e-mail message from the head office of the Japan Skating Federation (JSF) informing that one of their representatives had visited Yoyogi stadium and considered it suitable to host the World Figure Skating Championships 2010/11.
The said communication from the (JSF) informs that the situation in Tokyo is settled and seems to be in-line for conducting the Championships.
However the message of the head office of the JSF points out that the Narita Airport is closed.
Further information will be given to the ISU by the JSF, in the meantime the ISU wishes to remind that the ISU World Figure Skating Championships are scheduled to commence with the practice sessions on March 20, 2011.
The ISU, while expressing its sympathy to the Japan entities, is confident that the local conditions will permit to regularly conduct the Event.
The ISU is planning to issue another Communication in the next days.

What is going on with that competition event??????????????????????

Lepistö to Miss World Championships
Finnish figure skater Laura Lepistö will not compete at the upcoming World Championships in Japan. The Finnish Figure Skating Association announced on Monday that Lepistö injured her back in training last week.

Lepistö was surprisingly named in the World Championship squad despite a difficult season. Her preparations for the World Championships were also affected by flu.

Juulia Turkkila will go to the championships instead of Lepistö. She represented Finland at the European Championships in Bern this year. Kiira Korpi and Bela Papp will also represent Finland.

The World Championships will take place on March 21-27.

Japan Earthquake/Tsunami
13 Mar 2011 11:49

The ISU sympathizes deeply with the Japanese people in this monstrous natural disaster and extends its wishes of support and comfort to all those affected.Since the beginning of this crisis the ISU is monitoring the situation closely in cooperation with the Japan Skating Federation (JSF) who in turn is in contact with the competent and concerned Japanese authorities. The ISU has noted the JSF’s initial input regarding the situation in Tokyo and respected their initial desire to maintain the Championships as planned. However, the recent developments since Saturday, in particular the developments in the Fukushima nuclear plant are very worrisome and also resulted in travel advisories from many countries to avoid travelling to Japan until the situation is settled. The ISU continues to monitor the situation in cooperation with the JSF and the Japanese authorities in order to come to a conclusion as to maintaining or cancelling the Championships in Tokyo scheduled for next week. While the ISU is awaiting the declaration of the competent Japanese authorities that should be forthcoming shortly, the ISU will release a further statement as soon as possible but latest in the morning of Monday, March 14, 2011 (European time).

Pressure on ISU to cancel world championships.

The International Skating Union and the Japan Skating Federation have been faced with a tough decision in the days since the natural disasters hit Japan. The World Figure Skating Championships were due to start next week in Tokyo. Whilst no damage to the competition venue itself have been reported, there has been growing pressure from skaters, federations and fans to move, postpone or cancel the event.

The ISU recently released this statement, promising a final decision by Monday morning (European time). The German Skating Federation has withdrawn its entire team to add pressure to the federations and other countries may follow suit.

My opinion is that the event should be called off but that a separate charity event to raise money for the relief fund should be held elsewhere as soon as possible.

Understandably this will mean significant costs to the federations, but would be an ideal way to show support to a country in distress.

Skaters worldwide have also been spreading support via twitter. Special wishes go out to Fumie Suguri who's grandfather died yesterday morning and to Mirai Nagasu who has been waiting anxiously to hear news of her Japanese grandparents.

ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2011 Tokyo

Lausanne, March 14, 2011

Taking into account the continued critical developments in Japan, the ISU’s primary concern for the safety of all participants, spectators and members of concerned entities as well as the travel advisories from many governments to avoid travel to Japan until the situation is settled, the ISU in consultation and agreement with the Japan Skating Federation (JSF) and in line with the advise of the Japanese authorities, has concluded that the staging of the ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2011 scheduled to be held on March 21-27, 2011 is not possible and the Championships will not be held during that time. The postponement of the Event or alternatively the final cancellation is under evaluation.

The same applies to the ISU World Team Trophy in Figure Skating scheduled to be held in Yokohama on April 14-17, 2011.

It is understood that a postponement of the above-mentioned World Championships as well as the holding of the ISU World Team Trophy is subject to the confirmation by the competent Japanese authorities that the situation is back to normal conditions allowing the safe conduct of major ISU sports Events in the Tokyo area.

As soon as the situation in this respect has been finalized, the ISU will inform all parties concerned of the decision taken.

ISU postpones World Skating Championship in Japan
TOKYO | Mon Mar 14, 2011 5:30am EDT

TOKYO (Reuters) - As Japan struggles to recover following last week's devastating earthquake and tsunami, the International Skating Union (ISU) said on Monday the nation would not stage the World Figure Skating Championships scheduled for March 21-27.

An ISU statement said it would be impossible to stage the event in Tokyo as planned, due to "the continued critical developments in Japan" and that the postponement of the event or its cancellation was under evaluation.

Friday's 8.9 magnitude quake and subsequent tsunami may have killed more than 10,000 people in what Prime Minister Naoto Kan has declared his country's worst crisis since World War Two.

Infrastructure -- from roads and rail to power and ports -- has been crippled across much of the northeast of the country and there are fears of a major radiation leak from a stricken nuclear power plant in Fukushima, 240 km (150 miles) north of Tokyo, where engineers have been battling since the weekend to prevent a meltdown in three reactors.

Almost two million households were without power in the north, the government said. There were about 1.4 million without running water. Tens of thousands of people are missing.

Under the circumstances, the ISU decreed the world championships could not take place.

"The ISU in consultation and agreement with the Japan Skating Federation (JSF) and in line with the advice of the Japanese authorities, has concluded that the staging of the ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2011 scheduled to be held on March 21-27, 2011 is not possible and the Championships will not be held during that time," the statement read.

"The same applies to the ISU World Team Trophy in Figure Skating scheduled to be held in Yokohama on April 14-17, 2011.

"It is understood that a postponement of the above-mentioned World Championships as well as the holding of the ISU World Team Trophy is subject to the confirmation by the competent Japanese authorities that the situation is back to normal conditions allowing the safe conduct of major ISU sports events in the Tokyo area."

Earlier, Japan's J.League postponed all matches in March and the national team's participation in the Copa America was thrown in doubt.

A total of 41 games were postponed to a date yet to be determined, but J.League chairman Kazumi Ohigashi said they would probably be held in July -- the month Japan is due to make a guest appearance at the Copa America in Argentina, Japanese news agency Kyodo said.

With family safe, Dungjen and Sato deal with their skaters uncertainty
By Philip Hersh

No U.S. figure skating coaches are more sensitive to the situation in Japan than Yuka Sato and her husband, Jason Dungjen.

Sato was a world champion for Japan. Her father, Nobuo, and mother, Kumiko, coach some of Japan's leading skaters, including reigning world champion Mao Asada.

First things first: Dungjen said by telephone Monday afternoon that his wife's parents are fine, as are all the members of Yuka's family, although some of their friends had to be evacuated from the areas near Sendai where there is a risk of radiation from damaged nuclear plants.

Yuka Sato told the Detroit Free Press her mother was in Toyota City, some 300 miles from the earthquake epicenter, and her father in Tokyo when the quake hit.

Now that they are sure loved ones are safe, Dungjen and his wife can deal with their other concern: What kind of training program to devise for the skaters they coach who were headed to Japan for upcoming competitions left in limbo?

``The worst thing right now is the uncertainty,'' Dungjen said.

Alissa Czisny, the reigning U.S. woman's champion, was headed for the World Championships next week in Tokyo. Jeremy Abbott, the 2009-2010 U.S. men's champion, was going to the World Team Trophy April 14-17 in Yokohama.

The International Skating Union announced Monday the worlds will not take place next week, and both events could be postponed or cancelled.

ISU president Ottavio Cinquanta told me by telephone earlier today the federation needs to decide within three or four days when, where or if the competitions will be held. (For Cinquanta's comments, click here.)

``Alissa told me today, `I don't care when and where, let's just have it,''' Dungjen said.

Dungjen said he will adjust the skaters' training based on whatever decision is made.

If there is a delay of more than two weeks before worlds, he will give Czisny a few days off before returning to a normal training schedule.

``We've put her in a holding pattern,'' Dungjen said. ``Today, she just came in and skated lightly. If they keep us in limbo, she will keep training but try not to overwork anything.''

Dungjen and Sato had planned to scale back Czisny's training at the end of this week to have her fresh for worlds. She was scheduled to leave for Japan next Monday.

U.S. Figure Skating spokesperson Scottie Bibb said in an email that the USFS high performance director, Mitch Moyer, has been in contact with the coaches of all 15 U.S. athletes on the world team.

``They are being encouraged to keep training for worlds, and no coaches have expressed any concern with the event being postponed for a short time,'' Bibb wrote.

``The ISU understands they can't expect the athletes to stay at this level of training / preparation indefinitely and have that in mind during their efforts to reschedule the event.''

Dungjen said there is another factor in the rescheduling equation: ISU coaching seminars begin April 23, so the world events would need to be over before then.

While the ISU has not ruled out moving the events to different sites, one of its leading officials thinks logistical considerations make an 11th-hour change impossible.

ISU vice president David Dore of Canada told cbc.ca, ``In my view it is not possible to change it to another venue as the amount of work to be done could not possibly happen in this time. . .In my opinion, it takes a good three years to advance plan a worlds.''

La Gazzetta dello Sport

Three options for the world championship the first is to cancel them

Cinquanta, the ISU president, has announced that the figure skating tournament that should have taken place in Tokyo next week, will either be cancelled or postponed to next October: “At the moment respect for the Japanese people prevails”
MILAN, 15 March 2011 – “The respect for the Japanese people ahead of everything.” This will be the main focus of the ISU as it decides what will be of the 2011 figure skating World Championships that were scheduled to take place in Tokyo next week, but that were officially cancelled by the federation on Monday given the situation. What now appears to be certain, and that dismisses the suggestions emerged in the latest hours, is that the competition will not take place in the coming weeks at a different venue – said the Milan-born Ottavio Cinquanta, president of the international federation – it wouldn’t be correct towards a country that has been struck by such a tragedy and towards the Japanese federation, which was awarded the right to stage the competition. Furthermore, as far as the logistics are concerned, it would be very difficult given the time constraints. Staging a World Championship is no easy task.

THREE OPTIONS — There are three possibilities, as Cinquanta explained: “Our council will consider the situation very carefully. Presumably though, we will opt for the complete cancellation, or a postponement to October. In Tokyo, if the authorities give us the go ahead, or in a city in a different country, and in that eventuality there would be the promise to award Japan with an edition in the future. As soon as possible we will make a statement to make our decision official.”

the future — At the moment, the 2012 edition of the competition has been awarded to France (Nice) and the 2013 one to Canada (London, Ontario). It should also be kept in consideration that the first stage of the next Senior Grand Prix (Skate Canada) is scheduled to take place from 21 to 23 October; and that the only edition of a World Championship to be cancelled was in 1961, when the plane that carried the American team crashed during its landing in Brussels: 72 people died, of which 34 were part of the US team.

Do Japonska bych neodletěl, říká český krasobruslař Březina
A my bychom vodou upravovali led a svítili v hale na naše programy? To je nesmysl,“ pokračoval Březina.

Kdyby ISU šampionát nezrušila, bál byste se do Tokia letět?
Měl bych strach z té jaderné elektrárny. Reagoval bych asi podobně jako Němci. Ti už předtím, než ISU rozhodla, oznámili stažení svého týmu. Mé zdraví je důležitější než všechny medaile světa.

Co teď? Čekat a doufat?

If the ISU revoked the championship, you are afraid to fly to Tokyo?
I had a fear of the nuclear power plant. I probably would have reacted similarly to the Germans. They even before the ISU decided to withdraw its team announced. My health is more important than all medals of the world."

But after a few months away from rigorous training and pondering retirement, Bradley came back and wound up winning the national title. In doing so, he earned a berth to the 2011 World Figure Skating Championships in Tokyo.

Skaters should have their say
By Vladislav Luchianov Wednesday, March 16, 2011
I think we all already know about those ideas which are offered the ISU for the World Championships. Many specialists related to this sport found those ideas at least strange. Let’s start with the fact that ISU had no a "plan B ". How is this possible in the 21 century, when even without earthquakes and tsunamis there are other potential threats such as terroristic dangers and other emergencies? For such large events must be not only a "plan B ", but a "Plan C "!

Yesterday, in an interview with Italian La Gazzetta dello Sport, the president of ISU Ottavio Cinquanta said: “Our council will consider the situation very carefully. Presumably though, we will opt for the complete cancellation, or a postponement to October. In Tokyo, if the authorities give us the go ahead, or in a city in a different country, and in that eventuality there would be the promise to award Japan with an edition in the future. As soon as possible we will make a statement to make our decision official.”2011Worlds Championship Worlds10

Japan figure skating worlds should be moved

The time has come for the International Skating Union to make a courageous decision, and do it for all the right reasons.

With Japan struggling in the wake of last week's natural disaster, the ISU should move the world figure skating championships to another country, and do it as soon as possible.

Canceling or postponing the event until October, when Tokyo may or may not be ready to host it (the city is unable to do so now), should not be viable options.

With all due respect, the priority of every Japanese authority should involve the safety of the people of that country. The focus should be on healing wounds, repairing the damage, feeding the thousands of homeless and beginning the process of reconstruction.

By respectfully moving the championships to a different site, the ISU would be acknowledging that figure skaters in Japan are adored, sometimes worshiped, figures that may, if allowed to showcase their talent, play a small part in the recuperation of the national psyche during a time of crisis.

Chance to make a difference

This should not be about logistics or whether or not the championships can turn a profit.

Instead, this should be about sport playing the part it claims it can in the lives of ordinary people. Namely, that the gifted athletes become the embodiment of their proud nations and serve to inspire the masses with their uplifting performances.

Mao Asada, twice a world champion, and her teammate Miki Ando, who has also held the crown, along with the current men's champion Daisuke Takahashi, are superstars in Japan. They are followed wherever they travel by a crush of media. Back home, their millions of disciples anxiously crave word of their successes.

In this case, the efforts of the Japanese skaters become, symbolically at least, crucial, as people all over Japan desperately need something to cheer for. In other words, if athletes really are role models, then let the Japanese skaters fulfill their potential at the appointed hour.

The excuse that a venue, enough hotel rooms, or volunteers cannot be found in a limited time is hogwash. In a time of crisis, anything can be done. Where there's a will there's a way, and if need be all the proceeds from ticket sales should be directed to the relief effort in Japan.

Figure skating has a chance to make a difference right now.

The ISU should respectfully get on with the world championships and demonstrate that sport still has clout beyond the bottom line.

Sweden, Russia offer venues for Worlds
Two countries have publicly stated they are willing to host the World Championships on short notice as Japan's ability to host the event remains uncertain.
Two countries have publicly stated they are willing to host the World Championships on short notice as Japan's ability to host the event remains uncertain.

While ISU President Ottavio Cinquanta appears to favor having Worlds in Japan as late as October, Malmo, Sweden and Moscow, Russia have expressed interest in hosting the event more immediately.

The figure skating community is sympathetic to the Japanese people in their time of need, but if the World Championships is to happen in 2011, most are in favor of sooner rather than later. If the event is postponed until October, when the Grand Prix Series for the following season begins, the readiness and participation of many skaters would be substantially different than a typical World Championships.

Other cities that have come up in discussion are Torino, Italy and Lausanne, Switzerland. Torino hosted the 2010 Worlds Championships (and 2006 Olympics), while Lausanne is home to the ISU.

World Figure Skating Championships coaches not in favor of move to October

International Skating Union president Ottavio Cinquanta has said in interviews the last two days that he favors moving the 2011 World Figure Skating Championships to this fall in Japan -- before the start of next season -- instead of trying to stage the competition in another country in the next few weeks.

The aftermath of Japan's tragic earthquake and tsunami prevents the host figure skating federation from staging the event next week in Tokyo. The ISU announced earlier this week that it has postponed worlds indefinitely as it continues to evaluate options for the season-ending competition.

Earlier today, Cinquanta told the Chicago Tribune that holding the championships in April isn't practical, in part, because skaters might have conflicts with scheduled exhibitions.

"Then you have May, June, July, August -- you don't have to be a genius to understand May, June, July, August is not the best for the World Championships," Cinquanta said.

Asked whether he's worried what effect staging the competition in October would have on the subsequent season (which also starts that month with the Grand Prix circuit), Cinquanta said: "If we want to maintain the 2011 championships and award the medals, this could be the only possibility. To cancel the championships is easy from the point of view of making a decision, but it is very complicated because you eliminate a title for one season."

I spoke to three figure skating coaches today -- including two who coach five of the top 11 teams in the ISU world rankings in ice dance -- and none of them wants to see worlds moved to October. Each said they'd prefer to hold the competition in April or May in another country, if possible.

From Jason Dungjen of the Detroit Skating Club, who assists Yuka Sato, his wife, in coaching U.S. ladies' champion Alissa Czisny: "Depending on what happens in the next couple of weeks, is it going to be any safer (in Japan) in October than it is right now? The possibility of worlds being pushed back to October -- at that point, I think it would be better to cancel it. You're into next season, and you have a whole different set of rules, maybe, since the ISU meets in May. And then you're going to go from this year's world championships straight into the Grand Prix series, which means you're going to see the same programs all season. I would prefer an abbreviated field over total cancellation. But I would prefer cancellation over October."

Very categorical opinion....maybe I feel the same but for skaters who were going to go to Worlds it should be moved to other country....
World figure skating should be cancelled, not moved to October
".....The ISU should cancel the 2011 World Championships, so the blank line in the record book would stand forever as testimony to the horror and suffering that have befallen Japan, just the way a blank line forever recalls the 1961 tragedy."

Thoughts on the Japanese tragedy and the World Figure Skating Championships

March 17, 2011
Compiled by E. Walker, T. Flade, & P. Slater
By now we all know of the horrific natural disasters that has challenged the people of Japan in the last week. The rest of the world sits in front of computer screens and televisions hoping to hear good news, while an entire nation in mourning begins to put the pieces of their lives back together.

In many ways, the now postponed World Figure Skating Championships scheduled for next week in Tokyo now seems insignificant in comparison; however, there are many who wish to see the competition continue one way or another. Currently, the event is in limbo with the ISU announcing that they are considering several options including cancellation. The athletes who were to compete are also left in limbo, wondering if they should continue to train for the competition or start looking forward to the next chapter in their skating lives. Golden Skate spoke with skaters from all over the globe to hear what they have to say about the tragedy, how they are handling their preparations for the competition, and often, messages to their Japanese fans who have so generously supported them throughout their careers.
